Lancing FC visit the Crowborough Community Stadium with a record of one win, one draw and three defeats from their last five games. The win came away at Ringmer FC, 3-2 in mid-January, as they came from 2-1 down with five minutes to go with Alex Howell scoring twice to earn the points. The draw came away at Shoreham FC, 3-3, back in mid-December and the three defeats, two at home, have been against East Preston FC, 5-1 and Pagham FC, 2-1. The away defeat came in their last game when they travelled to play East Grinstead Town FC and lost 4-2 having been 1-0 up in the early stages. They then went 2-1 down mid-way through the second-half but pulled it back to 2-2 almost immediately, however, two late goals by the home side sealed their fate.
Lancing don't seem to have a problem scoring goals, 33 in the league so far, we have scored 43, but preventing the opposition from scoring seems to be their Achilles heel. They have so far shipped 53 league goals in to their net whereas we have only let in 27. Therefore, a level of consistency between attack and defence seems to be at the route of their problems.
Their goal scoring thread comes from Alex Howell who has scored ten times and Dom Shepherd who has scored nine times but looking at their team selection they seemed to have used quite a few players which may account for the lack of consistency.
However, they will prove a stiff test for the Crows and our players will need to be at the top of their game if the three points are to remain here with us.
Here is their match report from the East Grinstead Town FC game.
"The scoreline doesn't read good for Lancing but in this league fixture the lads put in a gutsy performance and there was a lot of effort and commitment throughout the 94 minutes. Lancing were missing several squad players and it reflects how far we have come this season by putting out a strong side who were equal to opponents holding a higher position in the league. Lancing took the lead in the 13th minute when Jared Rance, who had a fine game, smashed the ball into the roof of the net to give us an important early lead. What followed was an entertaining football game with both teams using the ball well putting the opposition defence under severe pressure. At times Lancing tried to play too much football and we allowed East Grinstead to have the ball in dangerous areas. As the half progressed, EG started to dominate midfield and they drew level with a clear offside goal, much to the consternation of the travelling support. Half time: East Grinstead 1 Lancing 1. Lancing showed their intentions early on when a typical twist and turn by Alex Howell saw the strikers shot well saved. On 59 minutes a defensive error allowed EG to take the lead. Minutes later an EG defensive howler allowed James Wotherspoon to score and make it 2-2. A minute later Howell again went close when his header flashed over the bar. With the game well open, James Shaw had to be sharp to block Geards shot and as EG continued to have more of the play, they took the lead from a corner in the 71st minute. Shaw again was called on to come to the rescue and with time running out Lancing threw caution to the wind in an effort to equalise. It wasn't really a surprise when EG counter attacked to score a fourth and win with a undeserved two goal cushion. Lancing had several good performers tonight- Shaw, Rance, Callaghan, Spinks, Fenton, Howell, Conway and Waterman put in good shifts. The Man of the Match award goes to Dave Sharman for an assured performance at the back. Sharman did what he is good at and showed how good he reads the game and always tried to use the ball intelligently. Match Reporter: Pat Callaghan.
