Defining Saturday?
Yesterday could prove to be a defining Saturday in who finishes second in the Sussex County League Division One, as Crowborough Athletic moved above Littlehampton following a 2-1 win against Dorking Wanderers. The Golds’ match at Newhaven was postponed, and the Crows were the only team in the chasing pack to take full advantage as they recorded their sixth straight win.
However, it was far from easy as the hosts fell behind to Tom Tolfrey’s penalty after 75 minutes.
With a goal 15 minutes from time, one would hope to see the game out, but this was not the case for Marc White’s men, with Jason Barton scoring twice in 5 minutes to turn the match around. East Grinstead Town remain fourth as they fell to only their second defeat from the last twelve away at Lancing.
The hosts went ahead on the brink of the interval in controversial style, as Owen Callaghan’s shot was fumbled by Mark Fox in the Wasps goal. Fox then thought he had got his body behind the ball in time to prevent the ball from crossing the line, but the linesman saw something that the visitors didn’t and awarded the goal.
Jono Melia then hit Lancing’s second with 13 minutes to go to wrap up the win and move the Culver Road outfit up to thirteenth.
Horsham YMCA failed to really close the gap on the Wasps, and are five points behind after drawing 0-0 with Rye United.
East Preston are eleven points clear at the top of the table, and still unbeaten after twenty-two matches, but were made to work hard for their 1-0 win against a stubborn Shoreham outfit.
Darren Boswell got the game’s only goal in the first half, with the hosts being put under pressure in the second period despite Carl Dunk being sent-off for the Mussels.
Elsewhere, goals from Josh Biggs, Scott Tipper and Rory Biggs were enough to Arundel to beat St Francis Rangers 3-1, whilst Perry Northeast hit a 89th minute equaliser for Chichester City to earn a point at Hassocks.
Two goals from Phil Gault put the Robins 2-1 ahead after Joe Grommett’s first half effort before the Chi player scored late on.
In the division’s other match, Rob Wimble’s first half effort cancelled out Jamie Bunn’s opener as Selsey played out a 1-1 draw with Ringmer.
