Sussex football news, Whitehawk FC sack their manager

Malcolm Boyes23 Jan 2014 - 22:57

Darren Freeman, the ex Brighton & Hove Albion player, has parted company with the Hawks.

Manager Darren Freeman has paid the price for some poor results this season and has lost his job as manager of the Skrill Conference South Division side. Ross Standen, former goalkeeper of the Hawks, who was part of Freeman's back room staff, has also left the club. As for assistant manager, Craig Brewster, apparently no decision has been made yet.
It has been a difficult first season at this level for Whitehawk FC and they have not won a league game at home since September 2013, however, arguably Freeman is the most successful manager in the club's history having won three titles in four seasons as they rose from the Sussex County Football League to the Skrill Conference South.
Other honours during Freeman's reign include winning the Sussex County Cup in 2012 and reaching the semi-final of the FA Vase and the last sixteen of the FA Trophy however, when the board met on Wednesday it decided that performances have not been good enough and a change is required.
The Hawks currently sit third from bottom in the division and lost their last home game on Saturday against Chelmsford City FC 4-0, however they did win their last game, away at Sussex County Football League, Division 1 leaders East Preston FC 3-0 in a Sussex Senior Cup tie on Tuesday.
The official club statement said the decision was a mutual one, however, a comment from Freeman himself, which was "I have been sacked, I'm shocked", would seem to indicate otherwise. At present there is no information as to who might succeed Freeman in the hot-seat at the Enclosed Ground but it is obvious their task will be to preserve the clubs status in the sixth tier of English football.
The club have commented that a temporary manager will be announced hopefully tomorrow and then applications will be invited for a permanent manager.
